David B. Pleat, Senior Partner, was recently invited by State Senate President-Elect, Don Gaetz, to provide testimony before the Senate Committee on Reapportionment. The Committee is charged with establishing new districts for House, Senate and Congress based on recent Constitutional Amendments 5 and 6. Mr. Pleat was able to share his experiences as the Democratic Candidate for House of Representatives (District 7) and the challenges covering a District covering parts of nine counties and two time zones. Mr. Pleat urged the Committee to establish common sense Districts which concentrate on natural geographic boundaries to simplify Districts. His comments specifically urged that the panhandle coastal communities make up Districts and the Northern parts of the panhandle Counties have their own Districts. Read More »

David B. Pleat, Senior Partner of the Firm, recently obtained a $100,000 verdict in a trial before the Circuit Court of Okaloosa County. The $100,000 represented the maximum amount of damages requested. The presiding Judge also ordered that the opposing party pay Mr. Pleat's client's attorneys' fees and costs. The case involved a dispute over a real estate contract and Mr. Pleat's client prevailed on its Complaint and defending against the defendant's Counter Complaint.

Leisure carrier Vision Airlines says it will operate a hub out of the Northwest Florida Regional Airport, raising the question of whether the Destin/Fort Walton Beach airport can succeed where airports serving places like Pittsburgh, Columbus (Ohio) and Raleigh/Durham could not.
Vision already flies to Destin/Fort Walton Beach from about two dozen destinations, but currently does not offer connections. That will change on June 1, a move Vision says will add "more than 100 new options for flights."

S780 GENERAL BILL by Senator Evelyn Lynn : Foreclosure Proceedings/Payment of Fees;
Requires a financial institution that institutes a foreclosure proceeding against residential property to pay all fees associated with or owed by the property which accrue from the date the foreclosure action is initiated until the foreclosure is finalized. Provides for retroactive application.
